Rossy and Maeve started nesting
on Saturday. A female budgie will lay between 4 and 8 eggs (one every 2 days).
Each egg needs to be incubated for 18 days, after which they will hatch.
Females will often only begin full-time incubating after the second egg has
been laid. Maeve laid five eggs before she began full-time incubation but may
lay some more.
Budgies are minimalist
nesters and require little more than a dry floor area lined with wood shavings
to lay their eggs on. Our wooden nesting box is a perfect substitute to the
tree holes budgies favour in the wild. The floor of our nesting has a concave
section to help the chicks grip when they hatch.
Budgies are usually very
good parents and it is not likely that we will need to intervene to help them
hatch the eggs. However, we may need to move them to a quieter location while
they are nesting.
We will keep you updated
on their progress! 😊
